Have you leveled up in your career, but somehow your branding and images never seem to reflect it?
In this quick guide, I’ll show you exactly what to wear for professional headshots for women. The right outfit makes a powerful difference in how you’re perceived—and helps your headshot reflect the confidence, credibility, and success you want to portray.

These are the same tips and secrets I've shared with hundreds of corporate clients to help them consistently get scroll-stopping headshots that bring them more clients and more opportunities.

Let's see what consistently works and what to wear for corporate headshots.

Table of Contents

    1. Colors, when unsure, stick to the classics!

The color of your clothing is one of the main differentiators between a professional looking headshot and a mediocre one.

Here's how I break color down. First, make sure you bring at least 1-2 variations of classic neutral tones when it comes to corporate headshots. The star of the show should be your face and your expression, not your clothing. Neutral tones can easily be paired together such as a white top with a navy blue blazer. When possible bringing variations is important because you never know what will look best in camera (more on that in section 3).

WHEN UNSURE, STICK TO THE CLASSICS! These colors are

    • White

    • Black

    • Grey

    • Navy Blue, Light Blue

    • Earth tones such as light Browns and Beiges

    2. Also bring color variations that make you feel great and confident.

We’ll decide together if it will photograph well or not. If your favorite outfits are on the bold or bright side, such as reds, oranges, pinks, still bring them! Sometimes the best outfits don't follow the photography norms, and if you feel amazing in an outfit, it's important to try it out.

The crucial part is to make sure you have at least 1-2 classic options, because we know these work consistently.

    3. If you don't bring it, I can't photograph it!

Tying the previous sections together: If possible, make sure you bring several options, especially if you want to have diversity. I always suggest my clients bring 3-4 outfits. You can bring a whole suitcase full of clothes if you want, and let your photographer pick the best options with you. The truth is that what looks good in real life doesn't always translate to a photo.

Remember, if you don’t bring it, we can’t shoot it, so bring variety!

That being said, variety isn't always possible or necessary. So if you're unsure on what to wear for headshots, I recommend sticking to the classics that consistently work (section 1).

    4. Are you emphasizing approachability or professionalism?

As a woman, what to wear for professional headshots will depend on what you want to portray. It's important to understand this. This will help you pick out the variations you want to try out!

Darker colors (black, navy blue), suit jackets, and dress shirts tend to convey more corporate leadership.

Lighter colors (whites, light blue, light grey) and less corporate outfits tend to convey more approachability.

For example, are you a banker who needs to convey professionalism above all, or are you an HR manager that wants to convey approachability? Obviously you can wear a white outfit and still look like a leader, but knowing these differences can help you decide what options to try out. I’ve included images below so you can clearly understand the difference. Many of my clients end up keeping multiple photos for different occasions.

Remember, your headshot has a real impact on your professional visibility. LinkedIn reports that profiles with a photo receive 21 times more profile views and 9 times more connection requests than profiles without one. The profiles with great headshots stand out exponentially more.

    5. The fit of your clothing makes all the difference in a professional headshot

The fit of your clothing is crucial. Baggy or excessively tight clothing won’t bring out your best

Similarly, your clothing should also look crisp and mostly wrinkle-free. Believe it or not, this can make or break the appearance of professionalism in a headshot. To start, make sure you iron or steam your clothing before the photoshoot. If you’re coming to my studio, don’t worry too much—I have an iron on hand. Some wrinkles are unavoidable and that's okay, but it shouldn't be distracting.

Next we want structured tops, and hard collars if we’re wearing dress shirts. That means no flimsy collars or necklines that collapse or lose their shape! They might look perfectly fine in everyday life, but in a close-up headshot, they can become surprisingly noticeable and distracting.

The goal is simple: clothing that fits well, holds its shape, and keeps the focus where it belongs—on you, not the wrinkles on your shirt.

    6. Prioritize solid colors or at least non-distracting patterns.

Go for clothing with solid colors (easiest) or simple lines and simple non distracting patterns. As previously mentioned, your best looking dress might look amazing in real life but not in a photograph. The star of the show should be you, not your outfit.

So make sure to avoid any distracting or excessive patterns (No flame or fruit patterns!).

    7. Keep clothing on the simple/classic side.

As long as you keep the clothing on the simple/classic side, you'll be fine, such as your best fitting professional top or dress. Today your goal is to look professional, not to wear the best outfit to impress a date. Bring a professional blazer if that’s a look you want. As usual, you can bring some more casual outfits and wild cards as well to at least try them out!

    8. Use Minimalist Accessories: Let Your Face Be the Focus

Professional headshots are all about the facial expression, that's why I suggest removing all distracting jewelry and keeping things simple —they shouldn’t compete for attention with you.

If you want to wear jewelry, bring a few options. Simple earrings and delicate necklaces can work beautifully without distracting from your face. In most cases, I’d avoid anything overly large, reflective, or attention-grabbing.

That said, your personal brand comes first. If bold, statement jewelry is part of who you are and how you want to be perceived, bring it! We can photograph you with different options and decide together what works best.

    9. Important tips on makeup and preparation.

    Headshot Moisturizing:

For the face I highly recommend everyone put on a good amount of moisturizer or aloe vera.
For the lips, use a simple lip gloss / lip balm  and avoid heavy lipstick.

    Headshot Makeup

Women’s makeup should look as if you were going to a company event and trying to impress people. That means nothing pushed to the extreme. When it comes to professional headshots makeup, you want your makeup to be light and fresh. Natural makeup that simply emphasizes your natural beauty is best.

Heavy makeup doesn’t photograph well in headshots. If you’re worried about covering up blemishes or wrinkles, it’s much easier for us to edit out blemishes than trying to manage makeup concealing them.
